2013 Honda Civic - TOP SAFETY PICK+ by IIHS

The 2013 Honda Civic Coupe (2-door) and the 2013 Honda Civic Sedan (4-door) were the ONLY vehicles in their small vehicle class to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ award! The IIHS is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries and property damage — from crashes on the nation's roads.

The Honda Civic Coupe and Honda Civic Sedan won these coveted IIHS safety awards by earning the top rating of “GOOD” in the new overlap frontal crash test that the IIHS introduced in 2012. This test replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or a stationary object such a building or a tree. In the test, 25 percent of a vehicle’s front end on the driver’s side strikes a five-foot-tall rigid barrier at 40 miles per hour.

Of the remaining ten small vehicles tested, only four earned “Acceptable”, three earned “Marginal”, and three earned “Poor”.

David Zuby, the Institute's chief research officer, described the poor protection provided by some of the vehicles not fairing as well as the Honda Civics in the tests:
  • safety cages collapsed,
  • driver airbags moved sideways with unstable steering columns
  • the dummy's head hit the instrument panel.
  • Side curtain airbags didn't deploy or didn't provide enough forward coverage to make a difference.

A few specific test results were described by the IIHS:
  • The VW Beetle’s steering column moved nearly five inches to the right as the crash test dummy’s upper body moved forward and to the left, meaning the dummy’s head barely contacted the front air bag. The safety belt allowed the dummy to move forward 13 inches and hit its head on the dashboard, and the side air bag didn't deploy.
  • In the case of the Kia Forte, the test found that a side-curtain air bag that deployed didn’t provide enough coverage and allowed the dummy’s head to hit the windshield pillar and instrument panel.
  • In the Chevrolet Sonic test, the air bag deployed after the dummy had moved toward the open driver window, leaving its head on the wrong side of the air bag, according to the IIHS.

2014 Honda Odyssey Sucks - Literally!

At the New York International Auto Show on March 27th, 2013 Honda showed off the new design for the 2014 Honda Odyssey. The newly redesigned 2014 Odyssey has small and large updates that range from new body styling, technology, and even a vacuum. The 2013 Odyssey was ranked #1 in minivans by US News and rankings and also received a “2013 Top Safety Pick” by the IIHS. Although unconfirmed by Honda, the new 2014 Odyssey is expected to arrive during the late summer of 2013. The Odyssey is also getting a major technology facelift, new safety and entertainment features are coming to the 2014 Odyssey. Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) will be available in the new 2014 Odyssey as well. Although the details of the FCW and LDW in the Odyssey are not clear yet, in other Honda Models a small camera or radar system are mounted on the front of the vehicle. When a vehicle in front of you gets too close it alerts the driver through visual and audio signals. The LDW utilizes a camera to detect lane markings on the road surface and alert the driver when the vehicle leaves it’s lane without using a signal.

Updated entertainment features will add new conveniences to the 2014 Odyssey. A 7’’ audio-touch screen to control your music and stereo. HondaLink will also be available; HondaLink is Honda’s cloud based software service that integrates third party applications into your vehicle to keep you connected. With HondaLink you can connect your smartphone to your vehicle via a BlueTooth link and read text messages on screen and navigate them with steering wheel controls. A new remote entry system has also been introduced that will allow drivers to use Push Button Start which will alleviates the need to insert you key into the ignition. Just press a button and go.

Honda didn’t forget about the exterior of the new 2014 Honda Odyssey either, with new styling the Odyssey has a sleeker, more refined appearance. The front of the vehicle received quite a bit of attention and will be sporting a new grille, hood, and headlights. The new hood appears to give the 2014 Odyssey more definition than its predecessor. The new headlights have a crisp clean look and Honda has removed one of the horizontal bars from the grille which gives the Odyssey a much cleaner sophisticated look. The rear headlights have also been updated with an LED bar that spans across the rear of the vehicle.

The 2013 Odyssey will be a welcome refresh to the already highly regarded Odyssey with its new safety, technology, and convenience features the vehicle will surely turn heads. Honda has not yet released an official date for the release of the 2014 Odyssey but it is expected to be available late summer 2013.

Honda Named Most Trusted, Best Value and Best Overall Brand

Kelley Blue Book reports in their 2013 Brand Image Survey that visitors to their site have again recognized Honda for its industry-leading reputation by naming it the winner of three different categories - more than any other brand.

1. Best Value Brand
Affordability, reliability and good resale value are key facets of new-car value, and Honda scores at or near the top in all three, earning from KBB.com visitors another Best Value Brand award. this is the third year in a row that Honda has won the "Best Value Brand" award.

2. Most Trusted Brand
This is the second year we've asked visitors to name their Most Trusted Brand, and it's the second year they've named Honda. With a reputation that precedes it and vehicles that seemingly never fail to deliver on the promise, Honda is like the perpetual motion machine of brand trust.

3. Honda: Best Overall Brand
Honda's win as Best Overall Brand among non-luxury shoppers hardly comes as a surprise in light of its refined and reliable vehicles and the manner in which Honda promotes itself.

2013 Consumer Report Car Issue

Looking for a new car? The 2013 issue of Consumer Reports, their annual Auto Issue, is a great place to start. It is available in hard copy at your local book store or electronically at consumerreports.org.

CR describes their "Top Picks" as being as close as it gets to “no-brainers” in the auto marketplace. "They’re impressive all-around vehicles, chosen from more than 280 we've recently tested, that have excelled in our testing, are reliable, and have performed well in independent crash tests. What’s not to like?"

To be considered for a top pick, a manufacture must offer at least three models for which adequate reliability data has been collected. Manufacturer's that were not considered because they failed to meet this requirement include Fiat, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Ram, and Smart.

To qualify as a top pick, a mode must:
•Road test. Score at or near the top of its category.
•Reliability. Have average or better predicted-reliability Rating in the latest CR Annual Auto Survey.
•Safety. Perform adequately if tested in crash or rollover tests conducted by the government or insurance industry.

This years top 10 picks include:

Honda

Mid-sized sedan: Honda Accord

The Accord was redesigned for 2013, and Honda nailed it, sending this sedan to the top of its class. This new model is roomy, nice to drive, well equipped, and very fuel efficient. Higher-trim models have safety features seldom found in this category. And the Accord’s price is very reasonable.

Minivan: Honda Odyssey

Reliability of the Odyssey has improved, and it has earned our top spot among family haulers. It provides a comfortable ride and a roomy, quiet, and versatile cabin. The rear seat is generous and easy to access. The V6 engine performs well and delivers a competitive 19 mpg. And a backup camera—a great safety feature—is now standard on all models. $36,830.

Small SUV: Honda CR-V

With redesigns of the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester just arriving, the CR-V has taken over as our top small SUV. Virtues include a smooth, responsive powertrain, good fuel economy, a compliant ride, excellent braking, a roomy rear seat, and outstanding reliability. It’s also one of the more competitively priced choices in the class. $26,455.

All New 2014 Honda Urban SUV Concept

On January 14th 2013 Honda officially unveiled its new “Urban SUV” concept at the 2013 Detroit auto show. The new vehicle slated for release later this year in Japan is expected to enter the US market in late 2014. The 2014 Honda Urban SUV is a sleek stylish concept taking elements of the Honda FIT and Honda CR-V and blending them into a “CUV” or crossover utility vehicle. The new model is expected to be priced below the Honda CR-V.

The Honda Urban SUV concept appears to be a combination of the Honda CR-V and Honda FIT. It is 9in shorter than the current CR-V, to give it better maneuverability on congested city streets. However, with its wide squatty appearance it seems like it would be a pleasure to drive on windy country roads. Although the new Honda model is smaller than the CR-V, it does feature space saving features such as the Magic Seat from the Honda FIT. The Magic Seat offers extra flexibility in the cargo storage area compared to more traditional SUV seats. The Magic Seat folds both vertically and horizontally depending on the type of cargo being stored, to maximize either vertical or horizontal storage space. The interior is also supposed to feature a next generation electronics package.

The new Honda concept SUV will use Honda’s Earth Dream Technology. Automotive News states: “The new engines have direct injection and double-overhead cams. They will produce at least a 10 percent fuel economy advantage over Honda's current four-cylinders” This new engine technology was also named in WardsAuto 10 best engines of 2013. Honda Earth Dream Technology is currently available in the 2013 Honda Accord.

The Honda Urban SUV concept vehicle has yet to be officially named by Honda, however it is expected to be released in Japan later this year followed by a late 2014 release in the US. The new Honda model is anticipated to be priced below the Honda CR-V. It will be manufactured in North America at Honda’s new Celaya Mexico manufacturing facility.

2013 Honda Accord - Arriving September 19, 2012
American Honda's custom is to not provide its dealers with specifications and pricing information on new models until dealership staff are trained by American Honda - days before the official release of the new model. This is again the case with the all new 2013 Honda Accord Sedan. Therefore, like you, Bernardi Honda of Natick and Brockton is left to learn about the all new 2013 Honda Accord Coupe and Sedan from what little Honda does annonce publically and from industry sites who specialize in researching new models.
Although the Honda Accord was introduced 36 years ago and is in its ninth generation, the 2013 Accord is not showing its age. Its new dynamic interior and exterior designs are complemented by state-of-the-art technology that is being introduced on the Accord. Consistently rated as the most fun-to-drive mid-size car in the Unted States, the 2013 Honda Accord Coupe and Sedan will raise the bar to new levels!

The Honda Accord leads the pack in terms of quality as well. In 2011, Honda posted the most dominant performance in the history of the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study by finishing as the top mainstream brand in the industry supported with 11 segment-leading products, including the Accord!
2013 Accord compared to original 1977 Accord
The exterior length of the 2013 Honda Accord has been significatnly shortened to improve handling and parking. Despite this, Honda's engineeers were successful at increasing interior passenger space, increasing driver visibility, and increasing cargo space through their innovative design.
To balance the innovative mechanical design of the 2013 Accord is the equally creative design of the 2013 Accord's technology. Among the new features being introduced by American Honda on the Accord are
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) - uses a video camera to monitor the roadway to detect visible lane markers. When lane markers are detected, the LDW compares the position of the 2013 Accord to the markers. If the driver deviates from a recognized lane, they are alerted by audible and visual warnings. To motivate the driver to use their turn signals, the LSD warnings are suspended when the run signals are used. Video Below
  • Forward Collission Warning (FCW) - FCW is designed to alert the driver to traffic condiitons in front of their 2013 Honda Accord. The system uses the same behind the windshield camera used for the LDW system to visually monitor the roadway in front of the vehicle. The camera senses objects in front fo the vehicle. If the space between your 2013 Accord and the vehicle in front of it becomes too small when traveling faster than 10 miles per hour, you will be notified by audible and visual alerts.
  • Lane Watch blind Spot display (HLW) - The only vehicle in its class to offer the feature, the 2013 Accord will have the Honda-exclusive "Honda Lane Watch" blind spot display system. It will use a camera mounted in the passenger side-view mirror to let the driver use their display to view vehicles in their blind spot. this real-time video approach avoids the risk of false warnings found in some other systems.Video Below
  • HondaLink - a cloud-based system that connects you to Bluetooth Streaming Audio, Pandor internet radio, SMS text mesaging
  • The available Honda Link Aha feature of that gives you access to personalied restaurant searhes, Facebook audio feeds, audiobooks using voice recognition
  • Expanded-view driver's mirror - debuted on on the 2012 CR-V - now standard equipment on the 2013 Accord.
  • Rear view back-up camera standard on the new 2013 Accord. And all NAVI-equipped Accords will be getting the multi-angle back up camera that was debuted on the new 2012 CR-V.

Lane Departure Warning

Forward Collission Warning
The 2013 Accord will be the first U.S. vehicle to apply Honda's new Earth Dreams powertrain technology - a new series of engines and transmissions that will ultimately find its way into all Honda models. These new engines re-envision the structure of Honda's legendary VTEC technology for more to deliver more efficient combustion through reduced friction. This will result in best-in-class fuel economy and high output for clean and fun driving performance.

The all-new 2013 Honda Accord will boast three new powertrains - including the new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with direct injection that delivers a significant boost in performance including additional horsepower and an increase in midrange torque.

The 4-cylinder 2013 Accord will also get a 6 speed manual transmission and an all-new continuously variable transmission CVT that will best-in-class efficiency, performance and sporty driving feel.

The 2013 V6 Accord Sedan and 2013 V6 Accord Coupe will have their horsepower and torque increased and will be equpped with a new 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual version.

The 2013 Accord will also be equipped with the Eco-Assist function and ECO button to help improve fuel efficient driving habits.

The all new for 2013 Accord will be available as a Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle utilizing Honda's all-new two-motor hybrid system which continuously moves through three different modes to maximize driving efficiency: all-electric, gasoline-electric, and direct-drive mode.

The 2013 Plug-In Hybrid Accord will travel up to 15 miles on electric power alone, with the driver able to control when the vehicle operates in all-electric mode.

If your commute starts on the highway, for example, the driver can decide not to switch to all-electric power until entering city traffic, where the technology has the greatest benefit to fuel economy.

And fully recharging the battery will take less than one and a half hours using a 240-volt charger.

Kelley Blue Book Gives Honda Highest Awards

Some automotive brands have retain their value better than others because the buyers perceive that they offer better long-term value. To systematically calculate what consumers think about long-term vehicle quality, Kelley Blue Book keeps track of how car buyers feel about their cars.

A key tool for collecting this information is the Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence's Brand Watch study. Brand Watch is an online study that taps into 12,000+ in-market new-vehicle shoppers who do their auto-related research on Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.

The market research that forms the basis of the awards examines consumer perceptions about each automotive brand, and the award winners represent those brands that capture the highest level of consumer perception in their individual categories.

2012 Most Trusted Brand: Honda
Without surprising anyone, Kelley Blue Book awarded the inaugural "Most Trusted Brand" to a name that's practically synonymous with reliability and dependability. Honda's vehicles enjoy a decades-deep reputation as the smart choice in so many of the categories in which it competes.

2012 Best Value Brand: Honda
Many car buyers assume a vehicle's sticker price is the most significant monetary factor when choosing a car. While it's certainly an important consideration, Honda's reputation for superb resale value, exceptional quality and legendary dependability continues to raise the bar in respect to automotive value.
